Pilot Custom Heritage 92 with Urushi Lacquer by Ian Scarborough

$600.00

At Kyuseido, we seek out and support artists young and old to keep the heritage of tradition alive. Today, we feature a very special artist, Ian Scarborough @ian.rush.bian . Ian is a self-taught young artist currently residing in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. His passion for lacquerwork encouraged Kyuseido to approach Ian for a special commission of a small number of signed pens in Tamenuri and Ishime styles.

Tamenuri is a finish that starts by preparing the base layer of coloured Urushi, then covering the colours with extremely thin layers of transparent (brown) Urushi. The resulting effect is a stunning finish that exudes a classic elegance with colours of the base layers peeking out at the edges. Ian created pens with Ao-Tamenuri (Blue), and Aka-Tamenuri (Red).

Ishime is a stone-like finish which is textured to the touch. This is a very traditional finish in Japanese Urushi lacquerwork and gives a tactile sensation to the pen while still having a classic look. Ian has sanded down the trim rings on the pens for this Ishime finish, which creates a uniform profile for the pen. The Ishime finish is available in Aka-Ishime (Red).

The nib size of all these pens are Broad nibs from Pilot, and can be ground to your nib size of choice. Please specify the nib size you would like to have at check out in the notes/additional comments section.

※ Please note that Urushi lacquer is a natural material and the colour of the pen will change over time with use. In general, the colours will become brighter and the pen will become shinier. Additionally, the lacquer is applied by hand and cannot be compared to mass produced work that come out of factories. There may be some small imperfections that come with the nature of handmade items. All sales are final for this product.
